Money: The Number 1 Marriage Killer
Money issues take the first place as the most common reason for divorce. When I was younger, I could not understand it. If two people love each other, I thought, why would they fight over money? If money is tight, why don’t they deal with it together, economizing, working hard, and focusing on the fact that they have each other, and that’s the most important thing?
I grew up and saw all kinds of situations when money ruined a marriage. It did not have to be poverty; it could be that a family was well off, but they couldn’t agree on spending, saving, investing, or something else. I have noticed that, just like in any other divorce, very often it only takes one to make an issue out of whatever money-related situation and bring the marriage to failure. One spouse might have all the right views on money, work hard, spend wisely, and be generous as well, but if the other has no sense of responsibility and just wants to spend, spend, spend, such a marriage will either fail or drag on in misery.
Once again, I would say choose wisely whom you marry. Check their views on money, watch their spending habits. And if you are already married to someone who causes continuous money-related problems, seek counseling.
